What is The Student Counselling Service?

The Student Counselling Service is an institution under the Danish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Higher Education (FIVU) where students at AP, bachelor, professional bachelor and master's level can seek therapeutic help when they experience issues that interfere with their ability to reach their potential as a student. It can be academic issues, social issues or psychological issues. Our staff include psychologists, social workers and psychiatrists and our help is free of charge and confidential.



Do you qualify for help at The Student Counselling Service?

To get help at The Student Counselling Service you have to meet certain requirements:


☑  You must be enrolled in a higher education program that gives you entitlement to state education grants.

☑  Your challenges must be related to your studies and fall within our main area of expertise, which you can read more about further below.


We only offer short-term therapy, which is 2-5 sessions; therefore, we will refer you elsewhere if your challenges require more profound therapy than we are able to offer you at The Student Counselling Service.


What is our area of expertise?

We offer counselling that is focused on study-related challenges and difficulties in relation to social, academic and psychological issues.


We do not treat mental disorders such as depression, anxiety or eating disorders. However, we can still help you to deal with your life as a student, even if you have symptoms of such mental illnesses.

How do you access our service?

To clarify if you are eligible for help at The Students Counselling Service, you have to call and make an appointment with a counsellor. The counsellor will help you assess your specific needs and determine which services, whether offered by The Student Counselling Service or elsewhere, will be most helpful in your situation.

If the counsellor finds you eligible for help at The Student Counselling Service, you will be referred to individual counselling, group counselling or a session with our psychiatric consultant, depending on your challenges.

You can call every Monday-Friday from 09.00-12.00 to book an appointment.



Throughout the year, we offer workshops on themes such as exam anxiety, stress, bachelor and master thesis. All students across programs can join, and all workshops are free of charge.

Each workshop has a duration of approximately 3 hours.

Phone counselling

If you have questions of social legal matter, regarding subjects such as state education grants, maternal leave or illness please call our secretaries at 70 26 75 00 monday to friday between 09.00 and 12.00 to schedule an appointment for a phone counselling session. Then one of our secretaries will sign you up and one of our counsellors will call you the next monday, wednesday or friday between 11.00 and 12.00

A phone counselling session has a duration of approximately 15-20 minutes.


Individual counselling

Subsequent to your initial appointment, you will be referred to a specific counsellor, who will be in charge of your further process.

Individual counselling is oriented toward short-term interventions designed to help you develop self-reliance and to succeed in the role as student. One session has a duration of approximately one hour and you will be given up to five sessions, depending on your difficulties.


Group counselling

Group therapy involves one or more counsellors who lead a group of roughly 5 to 10 students. Typically, groups meet for an hour or two each week, and extends over approximately 10 times.


The group is designed to target a specific problem, such as exam anxiety, or shyness, loneliness and low self-esteem. Joining a group of strangers may sound intimidating at first, but group therapy provides benefits that individual therapy may not. By seeing how other people tackle problems and make positive changes, you can discover a whole range of strategies for facing your own concerns.


Regularly talking and listening to others, helps you put your own problems in perspective. Often you may feel like you are the only one struggling — but you're not. It can be a relief to hear others discuss what they are going through, and realize you're not alone.


Note there can be waiting lists for group counselling!

If you wish to talk to one of our counsellors please call 70 26 75 00 and book an appointment.  Maybe one single session with a counsellor is all the help you need.

If not, the counsellor will help you determine what type of help is needed in your specific situation. It can be help at the Student Counselling Service or elsewhere. At the Student Counselling Service we offer help such as group counselling, individual counselling or sessions with one of our psychiatric specialist physicians.

Privacy notice

Privacy notice at The Student Counselling Service


As of May 25, 2018, new rules have been enforced for processing of personal data in the form of an EU Regulation, the General Data Protection Regulation, GDPR.  The intent of the regulation is to strengthen and unify data protection for individuals within the European Union.


Which personal information do we collect about you?
We collect the following data from you to identify you in our client record system.

  • First name and surname
  • Age
  • Social security number (CPR-number)
  • Phone number
  • E-mail
  • Gender
  • Address
  • Educational institution


What is our purpose of holding your personal information?
Your personal information is gathered and used for the purpose of providing the counselling you have attended for. The personal information is retained in order to document what happens during sessions and enable the counsellor to provide relevant and informed counselling.


Treatment method
We use the therapeutic treatment method Feedback-Informed Treatment (FIT) which enables us to track your progress and thereby provide you with the best help possible.

The method consists of two simple questionnaires, which your counsellor will ask you to fill out at the beginning and end of each counselling session.

When using FIT we collect and retain the following data about you;

  • First name
  • Client record number
  • Age
  • Gender
  • Information about your distress level

As soon as you end your counselling at The Student Counselling Service, we pseudonymize all before mentioned data. This means that we replace any identifying characteristics of data with a pseudonym, or, in other words, a value, which does not allow you to be directly identified. Hereafter we will only use the information for statistic purpose to document the effect of FIT.


For how long do we retain your personal information?
The Student Counselling Service is bound by legal requirements regarding client data records. The law (§ 15 journalføringsbekendtgørelsen) requires  us to retain client data records for 5 years if you have received counselling from a psychologist and 10 years  if you have received counselling form a psychiatrists. If you have received counselling form a social worker, you can ask to have your client data anonymized at once you finish your last session. If you choose not to exercise this right, we will retain your client data record for 5 years.

None of your personal information is disclosed to third party for any other purpose. Your personal information will only be disclosed if you consent.


What are your legal rights?
GDPR gives you the following rights regarding your personal information;

  • The  right of access 
  • The right to rectification
  • The right to erasure or right to be forgotten 
  • The right to restriction of processing
  • The right to be informed
  • The right to data portability
